Portugal's former European Commissioner António Vitorino criticized the government's narrow focus on work visas requiring employment contracts. He argued that bold immigration strategies must address labour shortages in the agriculture, fishing, hospitality, and construction sectors.

Vitorino emphasized the importance of welcoming workers of all skill levels, not just highly qualified ones. For instance, caregiving and fruit-picking jobs don't require advanced degrees but remain crucial to the economy.

Immigration contributed to Portugal's population growth in 2023, with 190,000 permanent immigrants arriving—a 95% increase from 2021. Vitorino also urged investment in integration policies for a harmonious multicultural society.

China has expanded its visa-free entry program to include nine more countries, aiming to revitalize its economy through tourism and business travel. Starting November 30, travellers from Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Estonia, Latvia, and Japan can stay in China for up to 30 days without a visa.

This brings the total to 38 countries with visa-free access since 2022. Japan’s inclusion highlights improving bilateral relations.

The program also extends eligibility to participants in academic and cultural exchanges. Previously strict pandemic-related entry restrictions have eased, contributing to 4.9 million visa-free entries from July to September.

Porto witnessed two opposing protests. The far-right Chega party organized an anti-immigration demonstration, attracting about 900 participants. Their leader, André Ventura, called for stricter border controls, claiming immigration causes crime. Some supporters wore MAGA hats, echoing rhetoric from Trump’s campaigns.

Nearby, 28 social organizations held an anti-fascist counter-protest with 700 attendees. They advocated for immigrant rights, housing, and regularization, rejecting racism and hate speech. Protesters emphasized Portugal’s immigrant heritage and the need for inclusivity.

Despite tensions, both protests remained separate. Immigration to Portugal has surged, with over one million legal immigrants and a 33% rise in foreign residents reported last year.
